Arizona Rivers

The Gulf of California and Southern Arizona’s rivers have been a life-giving circle in the Sonoran Desert. The San Pedro and Santa Cruz rivers begin their lives near the Sonora-Arizona border and flow north into Arizona then into the Gila River to the Colorado River and ultimately to the Gulf of California. This ‘circle of life’ has been important historically as native Americans and European explorers settled along the rivers. Archeological discoveries have found shells from the Gulf made into jewelry and other ceremonial items.

The Sonoran Sea Aquarium™ will be the only research and education institution worldwide to focus on this unique ‘circle of life,’ from desert rivers to open sea.
