The SDWI began its education mission shortly after its inception. While still in its facility development phase, the Sonoran Desert Waters Institute has been providing marine education to school children in the Tucson area since 1996. Education about biodiversity and sustainability is the focal point of the Aquarium's outreach efforts. The overwhelming on-going success of its Education and Outreach Program is a constant reminder of the need for and want of marine education in the region.

Sonoran Desert Waters Institute
Desert Waters Program

Because of the size of the Desert Waters exhibit there is a 3 - day minimum to book this program for your school or organization.

(55) minute classes at $25 per session with a $125.00 daily minimum.
Ideally, five sessions per day over 3 -4 days. Maximum (30) students per session. Sessions may be split/combined to accommodate K-1 students.
(Additional fee for travel out of Tucson area)

A SDWI Desert Waters experience for your students will begin with a dynamic presentation about the aquatic environments of Arizona and Mexico. Included in the presentation are facts about the rivers and native fishes, information about the Gulf of California and its marine life and concludes with a “tour” through the animal groups in our exhibit. We carry a strong message of environmental stewardship in all that we share with the children. For approximately the first 20 minutes our staff will lead a discussion highlighting items in the exhibit and afterwards your students will get to go “hands-on” through the exhibit. Children will have the chance to see, touch, and smell everything from corals to shells, invertebrates, fishes, bones, fossils, sharks and lots of sand. Our education staff will answer their questions as they explore.

This program is not available at the Arizona Sonora Desert Museum.

PLEASE NOTE: The Sonoran Desert Waters Institute Education and Outreach Programs are correlated with the Arizona Academic Standards in Science and cover a variety of topics that enhance classroom curriculum. Included with scheduled outreach presentations are teacher information packets with pre- and post-visit learning materials, handouts, and activities designed to make the most of a SDWI experience.

Class Preparation

Due to the importance and uniqueness of our program message, our goal is to bring this experience to all of the students in your school. We prefer to set up the exhibit for an entire week in a stationary area such as a library or multipurpose room, which can be locked in our absence. Classes come to see us each day at hour intervals for their experience. Booking priority is given to those schools that can host the Sonoran Desert Waters Institute for a full week. A full week for us is Monday through Thursday, and we will add Friday to the schedule, if necessary, to accommodate all of your students. To offer your children plenty of exploration time and individual attention from our staff, please keep your class size to 30-40 students! We offer a wealth of information for teachers as well, so we ask that teachers please remain with their class. Our program is extremely flexible and tailored to all age and ability groups. Prior to our arrival, we request that there are 9-10 long tables set up to hold the entire exhibit placed into a wide horse shoe shape.
