The SDWI began its education mission shortly after its inception. While still in its facility development phase, the Sonoran Desert Waters Institute has been providing marine education to school children in the Tucson area since 1996. Education about biodiversity and sustainability is the focal point of the Aquarium's outreach efforts. The overwhelming on-going success of its Education and Outreach Program is a constant reminder of the need for and want of marine education in the region.

Education Overview

Welcome to the Sonoran Desert Waters Institute Education Outreach program! Our mission is to foster an awareness of the wonders of the ocean, in particular the flora, fauna, culture, and geography of Arizona’s rivers to the Gulf of California (Sea of Cortez). We aim to enhance the public’s knowledge of the unique “circle of life” that includes the San Pedro, Santa Cruz, Gila, and Colorado Rivers as they make their journey ultimately to the Gulf. We strive to emphasize the importance of this circle of life in our Sonoran Desert, and the role of each individual in the preservation and conservation of its resources.

The Education Outreach program, which made its debut in January 1996, is constantly active, visiting school after school while reaching the community at large by attending the Tucson area’s largest public events.

The exhibit, which travels from event to event and school to school, consists of artifacts ranging from fossils to fishes and sea stars to sharks! The exhibit is completely hands-on. Children are guided through this dynamic experience by aquarium staff and trained volunteers.
